Going through tough times is a part of life. Life can feel like a challenging maze sometimes where you are left with difficult options, which might make you feel unfocused, overwhelmed, and helpless. Start dealing with this stress by finding immediate relief from emotional distress. Learn to deal with your emotions to ease some of your inner conflict and distress. Accept that tough times happen to all of us. These strategies will help you feel stronger, more empowered, and ready to deal with future challenges.

Slow down

If possible, don’t react immediately. Instead, be patient and collect as much information as possible. Ask yourself, Is this really going to matter a year from now? If the answer is yes, step back to remove yourself somewhat from the situation. Instead of seeing yourself as an active participant, try to view yourself as a representative of your company. This perspective will help you remain less emotional and improve your ability to make decisions.

Remain positive

Having a negative attitude about the challenges you face is a great way to snowball into feeling overwhelmed. Look at obstacles as opportunities to learn and tough assignments as chances to show the world what you are made of. Be confident in your ability to slay whatever dragon lies ahead.

Take a conscious breath

Let go of your focus and check back in with your body. Take a deep, conscious breath in, then let it go through your mouth, slowly and calmly, creating a wave of relaxation that starts in your chest and floats out through your being to the surface of your skin.

Remember: It’s not always about you

If someone attacks you with harsh words in a conversation or via email or phone then remind yourself that this may not even be about you.He might be going overboard or overreacting because he’s having a bad day with a sick child or just a lot of things going wrong. Or she may lash out because she’s unhappy with her job, marriage or haven’t had a good night’s sleep in a while. This reminder helps me to not take everything so personally and to think for a minute and calm down instead of being reactive and escalating the situation.

Control what you can

There is only so much we can control. We can’t control who our parents are. We can’t control the weather. We can’t control rent increases or our boss’ bad mood or subway delays. We can’t control the line at the drugstore. In moments you have zero control, focus on what you can do in that moment. I like to read the book I typically have on hand, write part of a blog post on my phone notes, delete old apps, text my mum, or write to-do lists.

Make a plan

Embrace alternative ways to approach the problem and identify what works best for you. Create a proper step-by-step plan to handle the situation. Often successful people apply the ‘back-casting’ method to analyse problems and available alternatives.
